Jimothy's Self Portrait
Alex Zakucia
Rather than simply carving Jimothy, I wanted to put him in the role of the woodcarver. Jimothy is seated at his carving chair working on a miniature carving of himself, making the piece a literal ‘Jimothy carving Jimothy’ self-portrait. The chair is notably a copy of the brettstuhl that I built for myself, as shown in the pictures. Rather than being made from oak I made the model chair from black walnut harvested from my father's residence near Johnstown PA. The entire project was made using flexcut tools except for the Helvie Jim Hiser signature knife
About: Hello! My name is Alex Zakucia, and I began carving about three years ago after moving into an apartment for law school, where limited space made larger woodworking projects impractical. I quickly grew to love the craft and eventually joined a carving club here in Central Pennsylvania. Now, as I near the end of law school, my carving has become an increasingly important creative outlet, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to enter my first carving competition.
