The World Can Be Cruel
Brea Rhodes
I received a grant for my local art crawl, where I was to make a linoleum carving for people to print. I saw Jimothy and was instantly inspired. I knew his story would be a good one to share. I used him as inspiration and the subject of my carving along with the words the world can be cruel therefore I won’t be. I really wanted a saying that would represent what Jimothy stands for.
About: I'm a 26 year old artist who earned my BFA in studio art in 2023 from St. Cloud State. As an artist I enjoy making playful and intentional markings along side bright colors. My work blends bold pop-culture influences with expressive approaches to painting and printmaking. This results in pieces that are playful and curious. My inspiration is from everyday life, especially my three cats. I also gain inspiration from the internet and things like memes. I enjoy the tension created by the juxtaposition of popular imagery with traditional techniques such as, linoleum carving, and painting. I make art because it brings me a lot of joy. I want to be able to capture that feeling and share it with others.
