Jimothy's Bounty
Sarah Hine
I wanted to create a playful portrait of Jimothy surrounded by some of the things a raccoon might encounter in the wild. The pumpkin, worm, fish, banana, and grapes give him his own little world, while the stars and his name give him the celebrity treatment he deserves.
About: I have been creating art on and off for more than ten years, primarily working in watercolor and acrylic. I earned my BFA in Animation and Visual Effects, and although I ultimately took a different path professionally, creating art has remained an important creative outlet for me.
I first discovered linocut through short videos on Instagram several years ago and immediately fell in love with the medium. I was so drawn to the process that I worried I would become obsessed for a few weeks and then move on, so it took me several years to finally give it a try. Less than two months ago, I finally took the leap, starting with small eraser stamps and gradually working my way up to larger pieces. This Jimothy piece is my first larger linocut.
What I love most about linocut is watching a sketch transform through the carving process. I find the carving itself relaxing, while experimenting with inks and papers adds another layer of creativity. There is something especially satisfying about finally making a print and seeing all of those individual steps come together into one finished piece. I have always been drawn to handmade art and the process behind it. In an art world that can sometimes feel focused on perfection, I enjoy embracing the small imperfections, texture, and character that come naturally with a handmade process. For me, those imperfections are not something to hide; they are part of what makes the artwork feel alive and uniquely handmade.
